Abstract
In this lecture I want to address myself to the questions: What is the lowest oxygen tension compatible with adequate function, and what are the factors that set this limit? Much of the background to the material present here has been reviewed extensively in the not too distant past (Jӧbsis '64), and I will take the liberty of letting that article provide most of the detailed justification of my remarks today.
