Description

In this interview, Green sat with Professor Ana Edwards of Virginia Commonwealth University to discuss his background and experiences as a member of the (Family Representative Council) FRC. He reveals how he first learned about the East Marshall Street Well. Green then chronicles how he joined the FRC and his recollection of retrieving the Well remains from the Smithsonian in 2019. He further details the FRC's search for a location to properly bury the remains along with the challenges faced by the FRC. He concludes by discussing how he envisioned memorialization and the project's success.

Biographical Note

Ana Edwards is a public historian and community activist. Currently, she is a teaching professor in VCU's Department of African American Studies. Most of her work centers on preserving the history and public spaces associated with Gabriel and the African Burial Ground in Shockoe Bottom.

Christopher Rashad Green is a member of the East Marshall Street Well Project’s Family Representative Council (FRC). He is also a community organizer in the Richmond area who specializes in political activism and health equity advocacy. Green has worked with a number of community organizations in and around the city including New Virginia Majority, the Richmond Food Justice Alliance, and Crossover Ministries. He is the founder of Free*Dome Unlimited, Inc. which provides advocacy and education related to community health and criminal justice reform. Green has also served as lead organizer at the Legal Aid Justice Center of Petersburg, Virginia since 2021.
