Abstract

This thesis is an explorative collection of the rough south as both a literary genre and a life experience. Many of these poems and short stories will bring forth complex ideas and situations, as they seek to paint a portraiture of family life in Appalachia; uncovering themes of masculinity, addiction, interpersonal and family violence, coming-of-age and the role of nature as a present and active part of the world on the page.
