Abstract
An examination and microhistory of Confederate nationalism in Mecklenburg County, Virginia, and the roles the entire population, free and enslaved, White and African American, had in the Confederate bid at nationhood. This thesis will explore the transition of loyalties from the Federal government, to the Confederate government, and then back to Federal loyalty. It will define what loyalty and nationalism looked like for Mecklenburg County and its surrounding areas.
