Abstract

Take the Jeans to Lublin is a novel-length work of historical fiction set at the collapse of communism in Poland from 1989 to 1990. Dina Rybczynski-Szpak is a young college student from a large and ferocious Polish American family in rural Vermont. When her grandmother reveals a dark secret about her World War II past and about Dina’s missing mother, Dina embarks on a quest to Poland for answers. Her desire for answers entangles her in the black market denim scene in Lublin, Poland, and as she falls deeper into the chaos of Poland’s economic and political upheaval, she tries harder and harder to answer her questions about her family and herself.
