Abstract
Old Flames is a novel excerpt and creative nonfiction essays. The novel-in-progress, Admissions, follows the increasingly fraudulent exploits of Paula Cunningham, a working-class mother, to scam her daughter’s way into an ivy league—culminating in an affair with Princeton’s crew coach. The novel considers power structures and privilege within the educational system. The collected personal essays navigate the writer’s migratory childhood, exploring addiction, sexuality, and the self-destructive tendencies of a family unit.
