Abstract

This dissertation in the form of three separate but connected papers focuses on the role of educational policy in determining how school counselors can effectively support LGBTQIA+ students in schools. Drawing on a combination of strengths based counseling theory, critical policy analysis, and critical queer theory, these papers aim to analyze both the mandates in place influencing the role and responsibilities of school counselors and school counselors’ experiences navigating these policies. Key takeaways include tangible strategies school counselors can use to support LGBTQIA+ students across policy contexts, recommendations for policymakers and educational leaders looking to improve legislation surrounding these topics, and a framework with which school counselors can evaluate their school settings to determine acceptable and impactful practices.
