Abstract
The Authority of My Experience is a written thesis documenting, expanding, and questioning how the practice of listening can transform public art spaces to become more inclusive for neurodiverse audiences. Partially written as an ethnographic novella, kodiCrone (aka Miri Sluis) details their explorations in VCUArts’ MFA Studio program with an emphasis in Kinetic Imaging by centering their own personal neurodivergent experience of growing up, becoming an adult, and ultimately an elder female bodied Crone in Dutch colonial culture. Aiming to transcend binaries in connecting with the more-than-human, kodiCrone investigates the role and perception of sound as a crucial lens through which to study sociological issues of concern. By drawing on theories and inspirations including James Bridle’s writings on non-binary, decentralization, and unknowing and Donna Haraway’s Chthulucene, kodiCrone (aka Miri Sluis) frames their MFA Thesis installation Being B~Y0(n)D Binary: waar t schuurt, waar t wringt and accompanying spatial audio composition The Authority of My Experience, by way of installations M3M~0R1 and Ver~Donkere~Manen: Sonic Mountain Climbing on the Dark Moon, as an arrival in Aspergistan, creating a neurodivergent TAZ as a quiet refuge from Extrovert Supremacy.
