Description
A photographic print of four Girl Scouts--Janet Shelton, Peggy Peregoy, Jean Miller and Virginia Howard--wearing Girl Scout uniforms, berets, and neckerchiefs. Janet and Peggy hold a garment while Jean and Virginia look on. On the table is a sign that reads "Section 23, Girl Scouts of America, Troops 49,59, 113, and 169." Other sewing projects are on the table. In the bottom left corner is what appears to be a "mammy" doll, a doll crafted to represent a racist caricature of enslaved Black women. Read more about the mammy caricature via the Jim Crow Museum. All individuals in the photograph appear to be white. The photograph has a bluish-gray airbrush background in the top quarter.
"we did it" handwritten on back. "We did it ourselves - Four members of Troop 113 look proudly at an example of their needle- work on display at a local store here. The garments will be distributed to children's organization by the NeedleWork Guild. Forty-five Richmond scouts participated in the project. Left to right are Janet Shelton, Peggy Peregoy, Jean Miller and Virginia Howard," clipped from newspaper and glued on back. "OCT 19 1951" typed on back. "This Photograph is property of The RIchmond Times Dispatch The Richmond News Leader And Must Not Be Used Without Permission" stamped on back.
