Contest newspaper and other artwork created by student editor Jess Soffian for the second Jurgen Comics Contest, 2022-2023.
The 2023 contest invited VCU students to explore the impact of industry and professional codes at the intersection of art, commerce and artistic freedom. Codes appear throughout the history of censorship in the form of written and unwritten standards that shape the production and distribution of creative work. “Coded” language and imagery have been used to evade or satisfy censors while signaling another meaning to people in the know.
