Abstract
Monica Sarmiento is the Executive Director of the Virginia Coalition for Immigrant Rights. Born in El Salvador, Monica emigrated to the United States with her parents as a child and grew up outside of Los Angeles, California. She moved to Virginia after high school and attended the University of the District of Columbia in Washington, D.C., where she majored in political science. She was the President of the Latino Student Association and received her Bachelor’s Degree in 2019. VACIR serves as a coordinator and mediator for immigrant rights organizations. In our interview, Monica discussed her experiences growing up among the obstacles that immigrants face in Virginia, the impact of COVID-19 on immigrant communities, and her work with VACIR, which includes lobbying the General Assembly and community organizing.
