Physical Details

Brass-plated light microscope in wooden carrying case with lens cases. Box is simple, light-grained wood with heavy iron handles and no significant ornamentation, has a top-opening hinge mechanism, and a key lock which does not function completely. The inside of the box is purpose-built to accommodate the microscope and two wooden enclosures for holding swappable lenses, with metal slides integrated into the side of the box to keep them in place. The two lens holders have three empty brass cylinders which presumably held lenses at one point, along with one 5mm eyepiece lens. The microscope itself is simply styled, with brass plated objective lenses and body and heavy steel base. The eyepiece is 10mm and swappable, attached to the body with a threaded screw-type fitting. The objective lens has fittings for three lenses, all swappable, and is fitted with 4mm, 16mm, and 19mm attachments. The focus knob has measurement values ticked in increments of 10 with ticks at each individual number from 0 to 100. Stage is affixed with a steel arm which can move approximately 270 degrees, with a mirror fitted underneath to feed light into the viewing area. Stage can be lowered and raised slightly with the use of a knob fitted underneath the base plate, and could also be entirely detached. Base of instrument is stamped "Lyons & Co. Ltd., New Orleans" as well as "Bausch & Lomb Optical Co., Rochester."
