Abstract

“A Medal for My Cat” chronicles the support and sacrifice that family provide to service members, as seen through the eyes of a cat. CiCi graduates from a PetSmart adoption program only to find herself enlisted as a lifelong wingman. She takes on her new role with gusto, usually leading the way, but sometimes… needing to stop and lick her wounds.

Articles, stories, and other compositions in this archive were written by participants in the Mighty Pen Project. The program, developed by author David L. Robbins, and in partnership with Virginia Commonwealth University and the Virginia War Memorial in Richmond, Virginia, offers veterans and their family members a customized twelve-week writing class, free of charge. The program encourages, supports, and assists participants in sharing their stories and experiences of military experience so both writer and audience may benefit.

Lt Col Margaret Serig graduated from the Virginia Military Institute in 2005. After U.S. Air Force pilot training she spent most of her career flying various airframes, including the KC-10, MC-12 and MQ-1. She has deployed in support of Operations Enduring Freedom and Iraqi Freedom. In 2020 Lt Col Serig became an instructor at the Inter-American Air Forces Academy, teaching instrument flight to partner nation students from Latin America. Through the Air Force she achieved her biggest goals: a better understanding of the people and places of the world with special emphasis on the Spanish language and Latin American culture. Her parents’ investment in high school flight lessons and study abroad definitely paid off!
