Abstract

Storytelling and Simulation-Based Experiences (SBEs) offer a powerful, equity-minded approach to teaching population health. Drawing on the NLN Jeffries Simulation Theory, Kolb’s experiential learning model, and the AACN 2021 Essentials, this session presents a SBE that integrates narrative design to immerse learners in community-centered care through a simulated Federally Qualified Health Center (FQHC) waiting room experience.

This SBE places students in a crowded FQHC waiting room to explore cultural humility, empathy, and health promotion in underserved settings. After the prebrief establishing purpose and psychological safety, students enter a conference room transformed with tight seating, limited walking space, and ambient noise. Each student draws a role card and, amid distractions, attempts to complete intake forms while encountering language barriers, rushed staff, and inconsistent processes. Standardized participants are positioned as the receptionist to model system stressors and brief, ineffective clinical interactions assist to surface emotional and communication challenges.

In the role of patients, students navigate multilingual, multicultural care. They encounter first hand how signage, literacy level, and sensory overload shape patient dignity, safety, and trust in a healthcare environment. During the debrief, students discuss emotions experienced, observed barriers, and the impact on health access. Students analyze culturally responsive techniques used in the healthcare setting and connect these to health outcomes. They identify structural barriers and articulate practical, patient-centered strategies to deliver equitable care in real-world clinics.
