Research Development Review: The NORDP Journal

Abstract

This study aimed to define, evaluate, and standardize the concepts of success, impact, and return on investment (ROI) in the context of internal grant administration. Understanding these elements is crucial for institutions aiming to maximize the value derived from internal funding. This preliminary research study explored the varying definitions of success, impact, and ROI across institutions, recognizing disparities between Grant Administrator and investigator perspectives. Survey questions were designed to investigate these definitions and assess current practices. Participants included 117 Grant Administrators (GAs) and Principal Investigators (PIs) at various institutions, recruited through the NORDP network. The study utilized a mixed-methods approach, employing both quantitative analysis through Chi-Square tests and qualitative thematic analysis via NVivo. Results indicated substantial differences in how success and impact are perceived, with significant variance found between GA and PI responses. While no strong consensus on ROI definitions emerged, notable themes highlighted the importance of incorporating both tangible and intangible metrics in evaluations. Conclusions underline the necessity for institutions to develop tailored evaluation frameworks that integrate both quantifiable and qualitative metrics, ensuring alignment with both institutional goals and PI expectations. Future research should address communication gaps between GAs and PIs, with targeted studies enhancing understanding of internal grant evaluation. Additionally, exploring Bourdieu's forms of capital may offer insights into assessing grants' broader impacts. Such advancements could inform best practices and better articulation of the benefits of internal grants across research institutions, driving improved strategic decision-making and effective institutional resource utilization, resulting in sustained support for the research enterprise.
