Reel Description

This reel contains footage of individuals gathered in a parking lot, where two individuals receive and inspect Ku Klux Klan robes. The footage is undated, and appears to be filmed in a parking lot near 521 E. Southside Plaza in Richmond, Virginia. However, it appears that this group was preparing for a march in downtown Richmond and at the Virginia State Capitol grounds reported to have occurred on July 8, 1967. Some group members appear in both reels of the event. This appears to be a group of majority white participants.

Event Description

On July 4, 1967, The Ku Klux Klan held a United Klans of America rally on Darbytown Road in Henrico County. KKK members in robes and hoods advertised the rally in downtown Richmond on June 28, 1967 (Richmond Times-Dispatch, June 29, 1967). At the rally, Henrico County police arrested Marshall Robert Kornegay, a grand dragon of the KKK, and Wilbur Louis Schrum, of Colonial Heights. They were charged with "setting up, promoting or otherwise participating in a lottery," for their roles in a car raffle at the rally. Some 400 individuals attended the rally, which police surveilled throughout the day. Speakers included Robert Scoggins, a grand dragon from South Carolina, and Charles Wilson, a grand klokard/lecturer from Emporia (Richmond Times-Dispatch, July 5, 1967). On July 8, KKK members visited Henrico County police headquarters in robes and hoods, and also marched in Willow Lawn, at the Virginia State Capitol grounds, and on Grace Street in downtown Richmond in protest of the arrests. They distributed fliers that read "Virginia has two set of laws" (Richmond Times-Dispatch, July 9, 1967). On July 9, Henrico Police requested help from the state police in order to surveil "roaming caravans of cars reportedly containing members of the Ku Klux Klan". The Richmond Times-Dispatch reported that about 200 cars parked in the police parking lot and began blowing their horns at 6PM, then left for a cross burning near Darbytown Road and Miller Road at 8PM (Richmond Times-Dispatch, July 10, 1967).
