Event Description
On October 21, 1967, some 100,000 individuals gathered near the Lincoln Memorial in Washington, D.C. for a demonstration against the Vietnam War. Organized by the National Mobilization Committee to End the War in Vietnam, the event included participants from a wide variety of communities including students, clergy, middle class professionals, activists, and other members of the counterculture. Events included a concert by Phil Ochs, and speeches by David Dellinger and Dr. Benjamin Spock. After the event at the Lincoln Memorial, 50,000 people marched across the Potomac River to the Pentagon, where they were confronted by U.S. Army paratroopers. The military used tear gas and physical force to disperse protestors, who remained at the Pentagon until around midnight. There were over 40 injuries and nearly 700 arrests. The event is considered emblematic of the anti-war movement of the time. (1967 March on the Pentagon, Wikipedia).
