Richmond March 15 My Dear Doctor, As I shall have this immediately on the adjournment of Congres,. I regret I shall not have the pleasure of again seeing you particularly, as I desired to repeat the hope that you might seek a transfer west of the Miss: where you would find many old friends of y[ou]r family and yourself who would gladly welcome you among them. I have just heard that you are mentioned in connescion with the professorship held by the late Dr. Conway in the Medical College of this City. As this Institution is the first in the Confederacy and has among its students representatives from all the states I shall be delighted to see you connected with it. I regard it of the highest importance at this time, true Southern men who have made sacrifices for our cause and who to scientific attainments join the character of the high toned gentlemen should be associated with our Institutions of learning. You must pardon what seems like a mere compliment to yourself in this expulsion for I feel what I say and beg you to believe me. Yrs very sincerely John Perkins P.S. I am suffering with a severe nervous head ache & am compelled to employ an amanuensis. [Endorsement:] Hon: John Perkins
