Treasury Department Second Auditor's Office Richmond, Va Dec 7 1864 Sir, Your letter of the 5th in reply to mine of the 1st inst is just rec'd. The list of names furnished you were of soldiers exclusively from Georgia, and therefore does not necessarily include all who have died in your Hospital. We are taking up the Final statements, which were reported to the Office by the Surgeons of Hospitals at the date of the death in the order of the States. [underscored] Your receipts from the Quarter Master should have been taken in duplicate, [underscored] one of which should be sent to this Office in order to a proper accounting therefor with the representatives of the deceased. I enclose copies of your Inventories now on file in the Office for the Effects of N. R Coleman, Jno. R. McKee, & Jno J. Watson which you could not find on your books. Whilst assured that you can explain all to my satisfaction, I must presume that you are no less liable as a contract Hospital for the preservation and disposition of the Effects of the decd. than Confederate Hospitals. over.
