Letter from John F. Therrel to L. S. Joynes expressing interest in attending lectures at the Medical College of Virginia.
Transcription
Orange Court House Va August 20th 1863 Dr. L[evin] S[mith] Joynes Sir, I am very desirous of attending the course of Medical Lecture at your institution, during the ensuing term. I have made application to the Surg[eon] Gen[era]l, to be allowed the privilege of doing so. I have been recommended to apply to yourself as one who would take an interest in obtaining the privilege for me. I was a Medical Student of two years standing at the commencement of the war, having attended two courses of Lect- ures at the New Orleans School of Medicine, though it is now over two years since I have had anything to do with the study of Medicine I think by close application to my studies, I could graduate after attending one course of Lectures. I have been informed that Med- ical Students {in the army} had been allowed to attend Lectures during the past Winter, if I have been correctly informed, and the privilege is still extended. I would be under many obligations to you if you would inform me what would be the best course for me to pursue to obtain the furtherance of my wishes, and any of other assistance you may be able and disposed to render me would be received as a great favor. With Much respect I remain Your obt Servt J[oh]n F. Therrel Co.K. 16th Miss[issippi] Reg[men]t John F. Therrel 16th Miss[issippi] Reg[imen]t
