Loring Divison Field Infirmary Lovejoy G[eorgi]a, Sept[ember] 14 1964 Sir: Hospital Steward Hall has just shown me a letter from you in reply to one he had written in relation to attending the Medical College at Richmond this winter wherein he had mentioned my name. I am under many obligations to you for the kind manner in which you proffer your assistance & influence with the Surgeon General on our behalf provided we make our "proper applications";__ about the 16th of July 1864 I made formal application to the Surgeon General for the appointment of Hospital Stweard, so that I might-thereby be transfered to duty at Rich- mond with a view of attending College to which I have never heard. I have awaited anxiously for some reply and now conclude that it is useless to wait longer, as they must have been lost or misplaced. Therefore I the more readily take advantage of your kind offer. You will find herein enclosed a copy of the aplication I sent the Surg[eo]n General. Though I have never recieved any appointment from the Sec[re]t[ar]y of War, yet I have been doing the duty of of Hospital Stweard, since the 11th Oct[ober]. 1862 at which time I was enrolled as such my Maj[or] M.F. Berry, Commanding Conscripts for Miss[issippi]. I have attended one course of Lectures at the University of Nashville in the winter of 1860 - [18]'61, and am excedingly anxious to finish my studies, as it is now all I will have to depend upon in after life. Hoping by your influence as I may get to attend your respectable College this winter, I am most respectfully etc. Joseph H. Knox [Addressed:] L.S.
