Abstract
College is an onset age for drinking problems to begin, college is also a new environment that can lead to discrimination due to the lack of diversity. The current study aims to examine the relationship between the mental health issues presented from experiencing discrimination. The study also aims to take drinking issues a step further and examine if familial ties of drinking issues related to both mental health as well as discrimination. Individual and interaction effects of discrimination and perceived family drinking on mental health issues were run through Stata. The study found that both perceived family drinking as well as discrimination had significant individual effects of a positive relationship with anxiety and depression. Meanwhile only perceived family drinking had a positive relationship with alcohol consumption. In conclusion racism and family alcohol history both hurt mental health, but only family history predicts how much people drink—so tackling inequality and offering family-focused alcohol interventions should go hand in hand.
