The Vegas or meadows, on which the city of Las Vegas is built, gradually broaden out and finally open up into the broad New Mexican plain that sweeps away toward the Southeast. Almost at the verge of plain and mountain the city of Las Vegas has grown into commercial importance. Population is about 10,000. Altitude 6,400 feet.
