Shenandoah County Court House, Woodstock, Virginia. Oldest court house in the United States west of the Blue Ridge Mountains. Built in 1791 when Shenandoah was Dunmore County. Nearby stood the church in which Gen'l. Peter Muhlenburg [sic]preached his immortal and martial sermon in 1777. Court Square was mustering place for soldiers in six wars. First clerk of the court was Thomas Marshall, father of the first Chief Justice of the United States Supreme Court. Records in the Clerks Office of this building begin in 1772. Population of the county 24,000.
