The National Capitol Building at Washington, D.C.- This magnificent structure is on a gentle elevation in a pleasure ground of 35 acres. The foundation stone was laid in 1793. It was destroyed by the British troops in 1814. The final completion of the building occurred in 1825. It was extended by an addition of two spacious wings in 1851. The center is 352 feet by 101 with a lofty dome; the wings being 142 feet by 238 feet, the entire building being 751 feet long, 324 feet deep covering 3 1/2 acres, the center of white sand stone and the wings white marble.
