“Mapping Migration Memories” is the result of a multi-year research project developed by VCUarts’ (In)>Tangible Lab. Gathering and using existing archived and recorded memories, photos, films and oral histories, Mapping Migration Memories captures the historical biannual nomadic movements between the desert and the sea in Qatar. Embarking on two expeditions to the desert, the artwork re-enacts migrations in the North and South, and documents their real locations and soundscapes. “Mapping Migration Memories” emphasizes the importance of intangible practices and oral traditions so often lost in rapidly developing societies, and acts as a testament to the passing down of generational knowledge and human perseverance.

Abstract

In October, 2022, the (IN)>Tangible Lab held an expedition to the South of Qatar, capturing the soundscape of the ecosystem as Maha Al Marri stepped into the footsteps of her ancestors and co-layered in co-presence with her past. The sounds collected where later redesigned by Guillaume Rousere into an immersive installation for both Msherieb Museums and QM in the travelling show to Yuz Museum, Shanghai.
