About the Journal of Hip Hop Studies

The Journal of Hip Hop Studies (JHHS) is a peer-reviewed journal published twice a year. JHHS publishes critically engaged, culturally relevant, rigorously researched, and astute analyses of Hip Hop. The journal positions itself within Hip Hop culture and the Black freedom struggle. JHHS' role in the culture is to provide an opportunity for those who are both academic and Hip Hop to have a voice in academia. JHHS' cultural immersion ensures better scholarship. At the same time, Hip Hop has always provided a voice for the voiceless. JHHS' recognition of Hip Hop's liberatory actions leads the journal to focus on publishing scholarship that speaks truth to power and challenges the cultural hegemony being propagated by White Supremacy. Moreover, in light of the oppression that Black and Brown scholars endure in academia, JHHS provides a space for them to achieve tenure through publishing and a platform to speak out against the injustices they experience. JHHS primarily publishes essays, poems, short stories, and book reviews that are grounded in and intersect with the field of Hip Hop studies. The submission process requires creation of an account in VCU Scholars Compass. Instructions for creating an account can be found under, "Policies" on the sidebar menu.
