Physical Details

Heavy hand-cast brass mortar with bead and crescent ornamentation. The bottom of the mortar is slighly uneven, as are the exterior ornamental details. The outside has four columns of four-ranked bead details, and four columns of roughly butterly-shaped opposing crescent and bar patterns, all somewhat rough-hewn. The top of the barrel has a protruding lip which extends approximately 40 degrees from the core of the mortar, and then folds into a steeply vertical drop to a rounded base. The brass on the interior is slighly pockmarked. There is a strip of clear tape affixed to the top of the mortar with some writing in pencil: "Jan 5, 1966 [illegible] Tho[?] Leesburg Va."
