Richmond Sept. 13 1861 Mr. J.J. Cook Fairfax C[ourt].H[ouse]. Sir: A letter from you to John H. Cook, who had been a patient in the Hospital of the Medical College, reached here a day or two since; and as Mr. Cook had been discharged from the Hospital to join his regiment somewhere in the neighborhood of Manassas, it was thought best to open it, to ascertain from whom it came, and re turn it to the writer. It was not thought advisable to forward it to J.H. Cook, as we did not know the exact position of his regiment, and therefore were uncertain to what post-office it should be sent. On opening the letter it was formed to contain a twenty dollar note. I have thought it safest to retain this money until I can hear from you. If you are still at Fairfax C.H. and will inform me to that effect, I will forward it to you immediately, or will send it to J.H. Cook, if you will let us know how it shall be addressed. The movements of our troops are so uncertain that I think it most prudent not to act in the matter without specific instructions. Yours Respectfully L. S. Joynes M.D. President of the Medical College Hospital.
