Camp Ellis' Battery Kenansville Duplin Co[unty] H[ead]. Q[uarters]. July 22nd 1864 Dr Joynes I received your telegram this morning & furthermore send the am[oun]t stated. I think there must be some mistake about the am[oun]t; when I sent the girl on April 26th I deposited one hundred & thirteen 33/100 dollars for which I have a receipt signed by N. G. Tunley [illegible] in the College. she has been with you Eighty five days up to your telegram, making the full am[oun]t which is stated in your dispatch at five dollar per day, unless you have charged more than that am[oun]t. I have sent you a surplus of one hundred & thirteen dollars if such be the case please turn it over to Mr Saml R. Adams of the firm Robinson & Adams & Co & please state to him if he can not sell the girl send her home by express Yours Respectfully A.J. Ellis Capt Com[mandin]g Ellis' Battery PS. Please acknowledge the receipt & state whether or not you charged more than the five [dollars agreed u]pon Capt. A.J. Ellis Kenansville, N.C.
