Mt Pleasant S.C. Aug the 5, 1864. Dr L. S. Joynes Richmond Va Dear Sir: Yours of the 25th ult[imo] came duly to hand I am quite sorry that I was unsuccessful in obtaining the object for which I sought as I flattered myself with the strong hope of attaining the object now being sought. My present detail is liable to a discontinuance at most any time. I am required to appear before the Medical Board once in every thirty (30) days. I inferred that your were under the impression that my detail existed for a longer period than thirty (30) days, which might make a difference with you. I learned from some Med Students who attended your Lectures last winter, that, through your benevolince & Energy, very stout men were detailed out of the army to attend a course of Med Lectures at Richmond and their was the cause of my applying to you to effect one for me. Not being acquainted with the course to pursue in making application to the proper authorities for a transfer, I respectfully request you to give me definite and full instructions in regard to this matter especially to whom the application must be made. Respectfully yours L[udy] M. Henderson [Endorsement:] L[udy] M. Henderson Mt. Pleasant SC Aug 5 1864 Relating to a transfer to Richmond to at- tend Medical Lectures
