Scott's Brigade - Hospital Atlanta Ga- Aug[ust] - 9th 1864 Surgeon McCall [McCaw] Professor in the Med[ical] College Richmond Va Sir, Being anxious to attend the Med[ical] College in Richmond this winter, we the undersigned, J[ames] G. Hall of 27th Ala[bama] Reg[imen]t and Jos[eph] H. Knox of 23rd Miss[issippi] Reg[imen]t, desire to learn by what means we can accomplish it and knowing you to be or have been an Army Surgeon and in ch[ar]g[e] of Chimborazo Hospital appeal to you for assistance in attaining an order: to report to you or some of the Surg[eon]s in ch[ar]g[e] of Hospital in Richmond for duty; that we may be allowed the pri- vilidge of attending the School. If it is possible which I presume you are able to acquaint us of, we hope that you will render us your assistance in so doing We are both serving in the capacity of Hospital Stewards- J[ames]. G. Hall with 27th Ala Regt- Jos[eph] H. Knox with 23rd Miss[issippi] Reg[imen]t Adams Brigade- I J[ames]. G. Hall am an Appointed Steward by the Sec[re]t[ary] of War which I presume will render attaining an Order more practical Mr. Knox was assigned to duty as Hosp[i]t[al] Steward by the Commander of the Conscript Beauro[bureau] of Miss[issippi] Oct[ober] 1862 he has attended one course of Lecture and is desirous of compleating his Education. Hoping that you reply to this will acquaint us of the course necessary to enable us to accomplish our desires We are your Ob[edien]t and Humble Serv[an]ts James G.
