Description

Letter from J.W. Walls asking that he be considered as an applicant for the Demonstrator of Anatomy position.

Transcription

Camp "Paxton" Stonewall Brigade Sir, I saw, a day or so since, in one of the Richmond papers,- your notice, that the annual Election for Demonstrator of Anatomy in the Richmond Med College would be held soon, and that all applications should be made to you, by the 6th of this month. Feeling assured that the position would be of advantage to me in the prosecution of a branch of my profession, I have had some experience in, and am ardently devoted to - and that its duties would only require my attention at a season of the year, not usually devoted to active operation in the field, and therefore not apt to conflict with that duty we all owe our country. I have the honor to solicit the appointment, altho[ugh] I regret that the notice has been too brief for me to collect and forward the necessary testimonials regarding qualifications etc. I will therefore state that I am a graduate of and for two years occupied the chair of Anatomy & Physiology in the Winchester Medical College Va, and can only refer you now to the annual catalogues & circular of that Institution, for the years 59&60 60&61 as reference, or to Surg H.H. McGuire, Lovingston, Va, Prof Surgery Winchester Medical College, surg. J.P. Smith First Army Med En Board Prof: Practice & Obstetrics, Surgeon Hunter McGuire. Med Director. 2nd Army corps Surgeon R.T. Coleman; Ch: Surg 1st Div. Med Corps, or surgeon F.W. Hancock, Richmond Va. either of the above gentlemen, I have the vanity to assert, would furnish me with comp- -plimentary letters if I had the time to call on them. Very Respectfully J. Wm Walls Surgeon of the Va Infantry "stonewall Brigade" near Hamilton [xing?] June 2nd 1868 J.W.
