Greensboro: Oct. 1864 Dear Doct[or] This will say that I arrived home one week ago I have been quite unwell. Confined to my bed and up for first time to day. I am extremely anxious to ef- fect the matter of which I spoke to you and think with your influence and action in the mat ter you can have me assigned to duty as Hos[pital] Steward in Richmond with priviledge of availing myself of the course of medical instruction. I desire very much to grad- uate and I donot think those in authority, should with- hold or interpose any ob- stacles against the educational advancement of the young men of the country, partic- ularly where to service or state could sufffer no det- rement thereby. My position is c.s.a is that of Hos[pital] Stweard appointed by Sec[retary] of war. I have already served nearly 3 years in that capacity in the field. You will please do all in your power in the matter and notify me of at this place. My kind regard to W[illia]m White and family and say to him that I will write in a few days. Yours very truly Cha[rles] Whelan Greensboro: Greene Co[mpany] Alabama [Endorsement:] Charles Whelan Hospital Steward Greensboro, Ala[bama] Oct. 1864 Desiring a transfer to Richmond to attend lectures
