Jackson Hosp[ita]l Oct. 7th 1864 L[evin S[mith] Joynes M.D. Sir I am hare as Hosp[ita]l Steward. I am exceedingly anxious to attend Lectures at the Med[ical]- College this winter, but will be unable to pay for the tickets in advance, but can pay you during next summer. I have a mother and sister to support which will take all the money I will get during the winter. This is the only opportunity I will have to study medecine. If you want security for the payment of the money I can give it to you next month; or as soon as my Representative (Waller R. Staples) comes to Richmond. If you want to know my character I can give you any testimonials that you may desire. I hope you will give my case a favorable consideration for the sake of my feelings you will please say nothing about this outside of those with whom you will have to confer about admitting me. Remember this is the only opportunity I will ever have to study the profession I desire above all others. Please let me hear from you as soon as possible. Respectfully Your Obt. Servt. Tho[ma]s J.
