Description

VCU Today, the University’s first official administrative organ, began as a somewhat irregular monthly publication but moved to a bi-weekly newspaper format in the 1980s. The newspaper changed its name to VCU Voice in 1988 and ten years later it appeared under the title UniverCity News. As it neared the end of its run as a physical newspaper, the publication became simply VCU News. These four publications were essentially the same periodical published under different titles by the Office of University Relations. VCU News appeared online for the first time in 2002.

Note

Special issues for parents published [1977-1979]. Issues were undated but numbered vol. 7A, 8A, 9A corresponding to the regular volume numbering for the student paper.

Recipes. A recipe for a university, for instance. For your base ingredient, start with a campus, in some recipes a pint-sized one, or two. Mix faculty and students in with an equal or greater number of administrators. Pour in a generous portion of cobblestones (pavement, an often preferred substitute) with some trees-not many trees-and the slightest hint of grass. Drain 22 turn-of-the-century townhouses of most of their furnishings, leaving just enough for flavoring and sprinkle in five former churches (at least two should have been designed by world-renowned architects), two major libraries, five urban hospitals, and a few highrises. Mix your architectural styles-Art Deco, Romanesque, Italiante, French Second Empire, Greek Revival, and 1950 Bland. Fold into an inner city location. Divide into two loaves placing one near a Civil War White House and a Jefferson-designed capitol, the other in a revived and groovy neighborhood. Stir for ten years and cool. Garnish heavily with an old Virginia Egyptian building. Serve as a university but savor the taste of an outdoor museum of architecture. To preserve the elegance of your gourmet delight, cover portions with state or national historic landmark designations. A luscious dish for even the most discriminating taste.
