Description
VCU Today, the University’s first official administrative organ, began as a somewhat irregular monthly publication but moved to a bi-weekly newspaper format in the 1980s. The newspaper changed its name to VCU Voice in 1988 and ten years later it appeared under the title UniverCity News. As it neared the end of its run as a physical newspaper, the publication became simply VCU News. These four publications were essentially the same periodical published under different titles by the Office of University Relations. VCU News appeared online for the first time in 2002.
Note
Special issues for parents published [1977-1979]. Issues were undated but numbered vol. 7A, 8A, 9A corresponding to the regular volume numbering for the student paper.
Headlines
Bigness. It has its sins. It implies, these days, a government that is too big. It reflects, in the Age of Jogging, adversely on the whipped cream topping on last night's second piece of pecan pie. It spells excess. But General Motors once told us what is good for them is good for the country. So bigness must have its virtues. It sets trends and influences people and even builds bureaucracies that take months to pay invoices. It makes the long-term infinite and the short-term fictional. At its least, bigness is huge. Still it's impressive. People don't hesitate to claim they have the most this or the most that. They brag. Even second largest counts. VCU counts it for sure. We actually boast being the second largest university in Virginia. Imagine the indignity. And it doesn't stop there. We, VCU, not only tell the world (and Virginia) we have 9,500 employees, we point out that we're the seventh largest employer in the state. We're proud. With Newport News Shipbuilding, C & P Telephone, General Electric, the Highway Department, Du Pont and Philip Morris our only competition, we think we've reached the big league. We are big. Look at us. Not bad for a ten year old.
